From TikTok to Tradition: A New Generation Is Looking Back to the Roots of the West
The renewed interest in Christian heritage among young cultural figures shows that Western civilization’s foundations remain relevant—even in a secular age.

WHY IT MATTERS
The West is experiencing a crisis of identity. After decades in which the connection between people and their cultural inheritance has steadily weakened, many young adults are discovering that modern life alone cannot answer deeper questions of meaning, belonging, and purpose. Increasingly, a generation raised in a digital age is looking beyond the endless churn of online culture towards faith, history, and tradition. Recent signs of renewed interest in Christianity among younger generations-from growing numbers of young adults exploring Catholicism to a wider fascination with pilgrimage, historic forms of worship, and ancient Christian practices suggest that the desire for roots has not disappeared. It has simply been waiting to be rediscovered.
For years, Western culture has portrayed Christianity and inherited traditions as belonging to another era. Progress is frequently defined as moving beyond religion, national memory, and historical identity rather than building upon them. The result is a growing cultural amnesia: societies enjoy the achievements of the Christian West even as they forget the beliefs and institutions that made those achievements possible .
A civilization cannot preserve what it refuses to remember. The answer is not to retreat from modernity, but to recognize that tradition provides the foundations on which a society understands itself, navigates the present, and moves confidently into the future.
Norwegian football star, Erling Haaland, serves as a striking example. At just 25, he seems to embody modern culture where global fame, commercial branding, mass sports entertainment and the relentless visibility of social media converge. Yet despite his fame, he has demonstrated a striking appreciation for Norway’s Christian heritage. During the World Cup, he was seen wearing what appeared to be a rosary-style cross necklace, while Norway’s national team wore a kit incorporating symbols inspired by the twelfth-century Urnes Stave Church, one of the country’s oldest surviving Christian churches. Haaland also reportedly spent more than £134,000 acquiring a rare medieval manuscript documenting Norway’s Christianization and its early Christian kings, which he later donated to a public library in his hometown of Bryne.
Christianity remains central to understanding Western civilization. It shaped Europe’s art, architecture, philosophy, laws and institutions and its influence endures - from the great cathedrals that define European cities to the moral language of human dignity and charity that continues to shape public and private moral life. To acknowledge this inheritance is not simply an act of religious belief; it is an acceptance of history.
The younger generation appears increasingly drawn to things that offer permanence in an age of constant change. Rather than dismissing this desire for rootedness, we should engage confidently with our history—bringing the wisdom, beauty and truth of the Christian traditions that shaped the West into conversation with the present. Restoring the West begins by remembering what built it.
THE BOTTOM LINE
Perhaps the most hopeful sign of this moment is that a generation surrounded by constant change is searching for what endures. The West’s renewal will not come through nostalgia, but through a confident recovery of the ideas, institutions, and beliefs that enabled it to flourish. Our task is to pass on this living inheritance—not as a relic of the past, but as a foundation for the future.

Interesting that the former Communist countries of Europe don't have this identity crisis. Why? It has only been 35 years since Communism fell. We lived it and know it. I was in Budapest in 2019 before COVID. There is a good kind of Nationalism and pride. Nationalism is not a bad thing. The Greeks, Italians, Irish... all think they are the best in a good sense. Hungary like other countries has survived Fascism, Communism and the Ottoman Empire. They are survivors. When Russia took over in 1945 they cut up our beautiful flag. They replaced our insignia w/ the hammer and sickle. They changed the names of streets to Communist. They changed the name of the local newspaper to Freedom---a mockery to us. The Judeo Christian foundations are still there--- biggest synogoge in Europe, Crosses in public places. The former PM said minimal migrants and vetted before coming in-- a guarded fence at the border. You can keep your traditions but don't try to change our culture. Marriage will always be one man one woman. Live as you wish but that is the law. Hungary was way behind us in immorality in 2019--- progressive thinking was only a few years old. The West however had years of peace after WWII and Vietnam and Korea were fought overseas. Academia, the hippies and "smart" people said God was dead and they were too "enlightened" to think such foolishness. The stability of the Judeo Christian family and homes continues to show stability and con tentment to our young people. I pray regularly for revival, renewel and repentance. Always me first LORD!
While Christianity has much to offer in both its orthodox and esoteric forms and is undoubtedly the foundation of the West, the most intellectual, open and progressive civilisation ever to have existed, I think the rekindled interest in it is less to do with its religious aspects and more to do with its cultural aspects.
If the West is to survive it desperately needs a standard around which to rally and the banner of Christianity in its historical context and spiritual offering offers a least as good a point of reference as any other that might be proffered.
