Two-Tier Justice Comes to America
A young mother is convicted for using a slur while an accused rapist walks free—proof that justice in America is no longer blind.
By now you will have read about last Saturday’s atrocity in Berlin, where a jihadist drove a van into the city’s Pride celebration, killing one person and wounding dozens of others. It’s a horrible and now horribly familiar story. It’s absurd and devastating that, were someone to mention a jihadi vehicle attack in Germany, a reasonable follow-up question would be “which one?” Please keep the victims in your prayers.
What I’m Thinking About
If you’re not on X, you might not have heard the name Shiloh Hendrix, but her case is one about which you should know. Just over a week ago, a jury in Rochester, Minnesota convicted Hendrix of disorderly conduct. Her crime? Using the n-word. At a playground in April 2025, Hendrix used the n-word while reprimanding a child who had stolen an applesauce pouch from Hendrix’s toddler. She then repeated it while walking away from a man who confronted her, while he filmed her and dared her to repeat it. The video went viral, and Hendrix was convicted of disorderly conduct in her confrontation with the man filming her. Slurs are ugly, but they’re not illegal. And an American woman now has a criminal record simply for using a slur during a verbal altercation with another adult.
The fact that Hendrix was charged at all is ridiculous, but it’s even more absurd when you know the story of the man who was filming her. In 2022, Sharmake Omar, who is Somali, was charged with raping a 16-year-old girl. He never faced a jury; last year, prosecutors in the same county dismissed the charges, one month before his confrontation with Hendrix, “in the interest of justice.”
